CCS (Combined Charging System)

The Combined Charging System (CCS) standard is based on the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) standards for a direct current fast charging system. It was officially established at the 26th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition in Los Angeles in 2012. Major automotive manufacturers like Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche, and Chrysler declared their commitment to a unified EV fast charging standard and jointly promoted the CCS standard. It quickly gained recognition from the automotive industry associations in the United States and Germany and became the universal charging standard in the U.S., EU countries, and those adopting U.S. and EU standards such as South Korea, Singapore, India, and Russia.

CCS Type 2 Standard

The CCS Type 2 standard has been increasingly adopted in Europe as the primary charging standard, capable of charging an EV with a range of 350 kilometers in just 30 minutes under its direct current fast charge mode. European brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi all support the CCS Type 2 standard charging stations.

Japanese CHAdeMO Standard

Developed by the CHAdeMO Association, the CHAdeMO standard was introduced in March 2010 by leading Japanese automakers and the largest EV charging firms, in collaboration with the government. CHAdeMO stands for fast charging, indicating a standard focused on high-power quick charging. Japanese automotive giants like Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and the Tokyo Electric Power Company support this standard, and it has been successfully introduced globally in models such as the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and Kia SOUL EV from South Korea.

Chinese National Standard GB/T

With China’s rapid development in the EV sector, becoming the largest producer and consumer of EVs globally, China has established its independent charging standard, the GB/T. This standard is crucial for the formation of China’s EV ecosystem. In 2015, China revised its standards to enhance safety and compatibility, and in 2018, further revisions were made to improve these aspects comprehensively. China is also developing and gradually implementing standards for high-power charging, small-power DC charging, wireless charging, bidirectional charging for EVs, and charging standards for special vehicles.
