Differences in advantages between DC and AC charging stations

Vehicle charging stations are generally divided into AC and DC charging stations. The biggest or only difference between the two is that one is for slow charging and the other is for fast charging. It takes 7-10 hours for AC charging stations to fully charge, while DC charging stations only need 1-2 hours.

Considering the charging time, DC charging stations have a significant advantage, and the attraction of fast charging is particularly strong.

However, considering various factors comprehensively, both types of charging stations have their own application scenarios, and the market for AC charging stations seems even larger.

Differences in advantages between DC and AC charging stations

For AC charging stations, the initial advantage is their low cost, and the construction is relatively simple. They don’t exert a significant load on transformers, allowing them to be directly installed in the power distribution cabinets of residential areas.

The maximum charging power of AC charging stations is 7KW. Most electric vehicles support AC charging. Electric cars usually have two charging ports: one for fast charging and one for slow charging. Some non-standard electric vehicles might only support AC charging and cannot use DC charging stations.

For DC charging stations, they convert a 380V power source into a high-current DC charging voltage through transformers. The charging current can reach up to 32A, with a charging power of up to 45 kilowatts. Typically, electric vehicles can be fully charged within one to two hours, ensuring a relatively short occupation time.

While DC charging stations are advantageous, they have a significant drawback: their installation and construction are relatively complex. Due to the higher charging power of DC charging stations, they require a higher power draw. This means that the transformer must have enough load capacity to support such high power. Many older residential areas, which did not preemptively lay out circuits and transformers, often lack the necessary conditions for installation.

It’s important to note that DC charging stations will be the trend in the development of the charging station market. Overall, both DC and AC charging stations have their own advantages. For newly constructed residential areas, planning for DC charging stations is recommended. For older residential areas, utilizing AC charging stations is advisable. This approach not only meets the charging needs of users but also doesn’t place a significant load on the community transformers.
